They're powerful rivals, but no one's immune to the ill effects of a recession. ────────────────────────────── have far-reaching effects, 広範囲にわたる影響を与える ────────────────────────────── If you describe actions, events, or changes as far-reaching, you mean that they have a very great influence and affect a great number of things. ex) The economy is in danger of collapse unless far-reaching reforms are implemented. ────────────────────────────── austerity, 緊縮財政、財政引き締め ────────────────────────────── Austerity is a situation in which people's living standards are reduced because of economic difficulties. ex) the years of austerity which followed the war. ────────────────────────────── salary moratorium, 昇給などの一時停止 ────────────────────────────── A moratorium on a particular activity or process is the stopping of it for a fixed period of time, usually as a result of an official agreement. ex) The House voted to impose a one-year moratorium on nuclear testing. ────────────────────────────── freeze on new hiring, 新規採用の凍結 ────────────────────────────── If the government or a company freeze things such as prices or wages, they state officially that they will not allow them to increase for a fixed period of time. ex) Wages have been frozen and workers laid off. ────────────────────────────── no one's immune to, …の影響を受けない人はいない ────────────────────────────── If you are immune to something that happens or is done, you are not affected by it. ex) Football is not immune to economic recession. ────────────────────────────── その他にも、次も押さえておきたい。[誌面の都合上省略] ★は重要表現 ────────────────────────────── ill effect, 悪影響 all the same, それでも、それにもかかわらず glazed, (砂糖シロップなどで表面に)つやをつけた knock on wood, うまくいくように ■もう一度読んでみよう The economic downturn is really having far-reaching effects.
