【ビジ英骨まで】Shady Investment Seinar (4) 5/27 2009
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ NHK実践ビジネス英語を骨までしゃぶるメルマガ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ みなさん こんにちは 本多です。 ＃初めて購読された方は一番下をお読みください。 土曜日に、映画「天使と悪魔」を見ました。 「ダヴィンチコード」より面白いですよ。 iKnow!という英語学習サイトは、現在、smart.fmという名前に 変わっていますが、このたびTED Talksが教材に加わったようです。 http://smart.fm/lists/87663 これまでのiKnow!の教材は初心者向けが多いという印象で、 実際登録はしているものの、使ってはいませんでした。 しかしTEDが教材になっているとなると、話は違います。 TEDは世界の一流の人々が講演をするというスタイルなので、 講演の英語を聞き取れるようになりたい方は、TEDのサイトを 見るとよいのですが、smart.fmで教材として使われますので、 こちらで無料で勉強してみてもよいでしょう。 さっそく、やってみました。 smart.fmでは、TEDの講演で使われる単語を学習します。 記憶の確認が繰り返し行われるのが特徴のようです。 自動的に記憶できるようなシステムになっているようです。 これをやって思い出したのが、昔の教育社のトレーニング ペーパーです。通称、トレペと呼ばれたこの通信教育は、 私も子供の頃学習していましたが、繰り返し学習が基本でした。 これと似ているな、と思いました。 英語、特に英単語の記憶は、繰り返しが必須ですから、 iKnow!のやり方はいいと思います。 ■NHKラジオ 実践ビジネス英語 Shady Investment Seinar (4) 5/27 2009 ■前回の復習です。答えは最後で financially literate sleazy fleece gullible have the presence of mind to You can say that again. put the squeeze on something fall for the hard sell liquid surrender charge be after ■意味を考えてみよう。今日取り上げる単語が含まれています。 It was a close call. You can replace 'call' with 'thing'. ex) It was a close call and looking back now I have no doubt that if my friend hadn't acted so promptly I would be dead. ────────────────────────────── take on a whole new dimension, まったく新たな様相を帯びる ────────────────────────────── If something takes on a new appearance or quality, it develops that appearance or quality. ex) Believing he had only a year to live, his writing took on a feverish intensity. ────────────────────────────── wind up, …する羽目に陥る、…となって終わる ────────────────────────────── If you wind up in a particular place, situation, or state, you are in it at the end of a series of actions, events, or experiences, even though you did not originally intend to be. ex) Little did I konw that I would actually wind up being on the staff. ────────────────────────────── buy something sight unseen, 下見もせずに買う ────────────────────────────── If you agree to buy something sight unseen, you agree to buy it, even though you have not seen it and do not know what condition it is in. ex) Although people sometimes buy property sight unseen, it's a remarkably bad idea. ────────────────────────────── clamp down, 取り締まる ────────────────────────────── To clamp down on people or activities means to take strong official action to stop or control them. ex) The authorities have got to clamp down on three trouble-makers. crack downとほぼ同じです。 ────────────────────────────── その他にも、次も押さえておきたい。[誌面の都合上省略] ★は重要表現 ────────────────────────────── easy prey,（比ゆ的に）格好の餌食、簡単にだまされる人 superficially, 表面的には、一見 be taken advantage of, いいように利用される、つけ込まれている unwitting victim, 知らないうちに被害者となっている人 be led to believe, 信じ込まされている plot of land, 土地の区画 desert or swampland, 砂漠や沼沢地 hands-off attitude, 無干渉の態度 caveat emptor, 買い主の危険負担、買い手の注意義務 ■もう一度読んでみよう It was a close call.
