Food For Thought

This month, my good friend from Los Angeles is visiting me in Japan.  
It will be his first time here, and I’ve been preparing to show him a 
good time.  Aside from all of the places and events around Kansai that 
I want to show him, I’ve really been thinking about what kinds of food 
we’ll be having.  Kansai is famous for its excellent foods and the 
incredible variety of cuisine available, so I figured that this would 
pose no problem.  Ramen, takoyaki, and of course, all-you-can-eat yakiniku 
would be in order, and we would feast like kings in the heart of Japan.

But then I noticed something on his flight itinerary.  For both the coming 
and going flights, I saw that he had booked the vegetarian meal on the 
airplane.  I was a bit shocked, because as long as I have known him, he 
was never a vegetarian.  But in the States, the change to (and back from) 
the vegetarian lifestyle is as common as changing your cell phone.

So now I’m wondering if it’s possible to eat well in Japan without the 
benefit of meat.  I suppose the answer is an obvious yes, because for 1200 
years, eating meat was banned by imperial law.  It wasn’t until 1872 when the 
Emperor Meiji decreed that it was okay and encouraged it by eating meat himself.  
But it leaves the question: what are we going to eat?  Rice and… rice?

I think back to my first time in Japan when I, myself was a vegetarian 
and had been for five years strong.  My decision to become a vegetarian 
came from a combination of high school angst and genuine moral outrage at 
the conditions animals faced when being raised for food.  When I came to 
Japan, I decided to allow fish into my diet because it was a staple of 
Japanese cuisine and it might be hard to avoid.  In reality, this resulted 
in about a hundred Filet-o-Fish sandwiches.  Near the end of my stay, I 
finally cracked and went back to full-time omnivore when I realized my 
last chance to try shabu-shabu was quickly approaching.

Thankfully, one of the greatest things about Kansai is its international 
variety of restaurants.  Thai, Indian, and Turkish eateries abound in Osaka, 
so my friend will be in good hands.  Failing those, I suppose we could try 
to take a meal at a Buddhist temple.  There’s also comfort in knowing that 
beer contains just enough calories to physically survive, but I’m hoping 
that we can find something a bit more substantial.
