Hello, folks.  This week, I’ll be discussing English on the Internet, 
which is some of the newest English that exists today.

The Internet is probably the most revolutionary achievement of our time. 
It is also a wonderful opportunity for you to practice using English.  
Chat rooms, forums, and discussion threads are some typical ways that 
people carry on conversations on the Internet, and anyone is welcome 
to join.  But have you noticed that the English online is a little 
bit…unusual?

If you visit any of these sites, you may notice a great deal of 
non-standardized English.   It is very common to see words missing 
capital letters and punctuation.  Many, many words are misspelled, too. 
This drives English teachers crazy, but it is encouraging to see that 
you can participate in online conversations even if your English is not 
perfect.  Indeed, there are many native speakers whose learning of English 
is incomplete.  But not all of these errors are accidental.  Some people 
type this way intentionally, either to save time or to give their messages 
a feeling of nonchalance.   

There are also many "codes" which have become commonplace in online 
communication.  The first is the "emoticon," which is a face "drawn" 
with letters, numbers, and punctuation and is often read sideways.  
If you tilt your head 90 degrees to the left, you can see that : ) looks like 
a smiling face.  : ( is a frowning face and :O is a surprised face.  Emoticons 
are used to convey an emotion or clarify whether the speaker is serious or just 
joking.  This can be very helpful when text by itself can look very impersonal.  
A message like “Leave me alone!” is understood to be a joke when combined 
with a ;P which is a winking face with the tongue playfully sticking out, 
while >:( would convey a different message altogether.

There are also several abbreviations and acronyms used in online speech.  
"LOL" stands for "laughing out loud" and is used to indicate laughing.  
In a more extreme example "ROFL" means "rolling on the floor laughing," 
and is used when the speaker thinks something is hilarious.  In a moment of 
surprise, people often write "OMG" meaning "Oh my God!"  In an instant chat, 
someone may tell you "BRB" (be right back) or "G2G,” meaning “(I’ve) Got 
To Go” when they have to leave.

Which brings us to the code that uses the phonetic sounds of letters and 
numbers to relay a message.  "CU l8r" is a good example of this.  
When we take "C" and "U" we have the first part "See you," and then an "l" plus "8" 
creates "late."  Add an "r" to the end, and we have the message "See you later."  
Whether we're saving time or adding style, the Internet is a virtual playground for
