1) Problems crop up when people from different regions and
backgrounds use English together for communication. Shiga and his
coworkers discuss some of the consequences.

2) offshoring
In the U.S., you can talk about "offshoring," which means
outsourcing outside of North America. You have to be careful with
some of these words. Many of them are rather fashionable but they
don't have exactly the same meaning. If you outsource to Mexico or
Canada, for example, from the U.S., it's not "offshoring." It's
outsourcing or subcontracting or you could even use older phrases
such as "farm out."

3) lingua franca
A "lingua franca" is any language or blend of languages that people
use to communicate with each other when they come from different
language backgrounds.

4) get l and r mixed up in words
A couple other words I find people have trouble with are "collect"
and "correct."

5) I think if you would like to help yourself distinguish more
clearly between "l" and "r" and use them more accurately, a first
step might be to remember that English "l" is closer to Japanese
sound and English "r" is completely different from any sounds in
Japanese. So, maybe you could begin by focusing on the "l"s and then
pick up the "r" sound a little bit later.

6) crystal clear
And the opposite of that sometimes people use a little cynically is
to say, "Ha! It must be clear as mud."

7) to mutual confusion
"To mutual confusion" is kind of a set phrase. You could use
"mutual" or "mutually" in a different sentence. We mutually
misunderstood each other, for example.

8) explicit
I think the word "explicit" in this message is very important
because if it's said in words or written on paper in words, you can
go back and review it and discuss it if problems crop up. But if you
are relying on unstated messages, if you are relying on fine
differences or subtle nuances, it's much harder for people from
different cultures and different language backgrounds to understand
each other. Sometimes it's a little painful being "explicit," but I
think you can avoid more problems in the long run that way.

9) from pole to pole
"From pole to pole" is a phrase that refers to the whole world. The
two poles are the North Pole and the South Pole. So if you include
them, you are including the whole world.

10) muddy the water
Here is another phrase that refers to whether something is "crystal
clear" or "clear as mud." If you muddy the water, you can't see
through it, it's unclear.

11) And in the U.S. Federal Government, there's the Department of
Commerce and the Secretary of Commerce.

12) This is a word that came into English from French. So it has
various pronunciations. In my dictionary, the first pronunciation
has the stress on the first syllable, which means that's probably
the most common one, but there are various variations of this that
you'll probably hear.

昨日はNHKデデュケーショナル主催、トークマスターでおなじみのサ
ン電子さん協賛のイベントがありました。

岩村圭南先生：　ラジオ講座「徹底トレーニング英会話」
遠山顕先生：　ラジオ講座「ラジオ英会話」
西蔭浩子先生：　テレビ講座「英語が伝わる！100のツボ」
とくパパさん：　トークマスターのマスター　

のお話を聞くことができました。さすがに NHK の先生方、そしておしゃ
べり上手なとくパパさん、聴衆の心をグッと掴む話し方をしますね。と
ても刺激的なよい一日となりました。

今回は協賛のサン電子さんが招待席を用意してくださっていたので、
一番前の特等席で先生方のお話を聞くことができました。サン電子さ
ん、どうもありがとうございます。

メルマガの巨匠、とくパパ氏と本多氏などと並びながら先頭に陣取っ
ていると岩村圭南先生、なんと英語練習コーナーで私を当てるではあ
りませんか！ドキッ！！　何とかしどろもどろでクリア。

遠山先生は、目ざとく私を見つけてくれたみたいでステージの上から
アイコンタクトで微笑んでくださり（私の気のせい？）嬉しかったです。

帰りに玄関前で、本多氏、とくパパ氏、ほかの英語仲間たちと記念写
真を撮ろうとしていたらちょうど遠山先生登場！ちゃっかり記念撮影に
ご一緒してくださるようお願いしてしまいました。

先生「何か先生のイベントないですか？」とお聞きしましたら、
ありましたよーーー！！先生から手渡しでチラシをいただいてきまし
た。遠山先生、ディナーショーで歌手に変身ですよ。
