■ casualty
1) "Casualties" could be the soldiers who were killed or even the
civilians,
other people who get mixed up in a fighting, although nowadays they
often
call civilians who accidentally get killed "collateral damage."
2) One more thing about "casualty," you'll often find it in the name
of
insurance companies.
■ snail mail
3) E-mail is kind of interesting because it's becoming a countable
noun. If
you are talking about "snail mail," actual envelopes and cards,
people use
it as uncountable. You have to say "I have a piece of mail." or "I
received
five pieces today." But with e-mail, people use it in the plural: "I
got six
e-mails today." I think this often happens when you take one word
and apply
it in a new situation. It tends to become regularized.
■ mail carrier
4) I think that's for two reasons. One is there are some female
firefighters. The other one is because fireman has another meaning.
It's
similar to stoker. It's a person who puts fuel into the boiler of a
steam
engine, for example.
■ one's days are numbered
5) You can use the phrase very loosely sometimes to mean trouble is
coming.
■ telly
6) I think everyone in the U.S. knows it, but if you tried using it,
you'd
probably sound kind of pretentious.

1月末、NHKの新年度語学番組の制作記者会見に行ってまいりまし
た。女優の松坂慶子さん（英語担当）、小池栄子さん（中国語担当）
も会場にいらしていて、とっても華やかでした。お2人ともTVで見るよ
りも、ずっとずっときれいで素敵ですね。
